A closer look at the history of the forgotten landings

In 1942, Europe was ravaged by World War II. In November of the same year, Provence fell under German occupation. German forces invaded the free zone, strengthening their grip on French territory to counter a potential Allied invasion.

On the night of the 14th to the 15th of August 1944, Allied troops landed on the beaches between Toulon and Saint-Raphaël. At 8am, around 95,000 soldiers launched an assault on 18 beaches. Supported by the Resistance, which had been preparing for the day for weeks, the Allies quickly secured victories. Only a few strongpoints held out. After several days of fighting, on the 28th of August, the Germans surrendered.
